DoD Directives on Use of Deadly Force

From: Randy Haskin <strega1@ix.netcom.com>

Air Force Instruction 31-101 provides guidance on use of Deadly
Force. The circumstances under which deadly force may be
employed, however, are not USAF, but DoD directives. DoD Dir. 5210.56
specifies these situations.

Here are a few excerpts from DoD 5210.56:

- Deadly force may be used in protection of DoD assets designated as vital
to the national security. This includes Priority A, B, or C assets, and
othe assets soecifically designated by the installation commander [Note:
Presidential Support is an example of a "Priority A" asset..-Randy]

- Deadly force may be used while performing official duties when you
reasonably believe yourself or others to be in imminent danger of death or
serious bodily harm.

- Deadly force may be used to prevent serious violent offences that could
result in death or critical bodily harm.

- Deadly force may be used when it appears necessary to arrest or
apprenend a person suspected of committing an offense as specified above

- It is important to note -- use the MINIMUM AMOUNT of force necessary when
conditions warrant the use of force. If you use excessive force in
discharging your assigned responsibilities, you are subject to
administrative of judicial action.

I recommend that someone try to get a copy of 5210 through FOIA.
