Consciousness Studies
NEW SCIENCE CHAIR ESTABLISHED AT UNLV
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas is pleased to announce the
establishment of the Bigelow Chair of Consciousness Studies at UNLV.
A substantial gift from Robert T. and Diane Bigelow will fund the new
academic position in the College of Sciences. The position will be
filled on an annual basis by distinguished visiting science scholars
and a nationwide recruitment search is currently being conducted.
Funding is also available for the employment of a teaching/research
assistant who will report directly to the visiting scholar. The goal
is to fill this new infrastructure in sufficient time to begin classes
this fall.
The purpose of the chair is to create a permanent scholarly
environment for teaching and research as they directly apply to
aspects of dissociative states of human consciousness, particularly as
it relates to survival after bodily death. The approach to teaching
and research on this subject will be from an evidential, scientific,
and factual basis. Those involved in this endeavor shall maintain the
highest ethical and scientific standards in all aspects of their work.
This would include exploring the important research done by clinical
biochemists, neurobiologists and others who are trying to understand
consciousness.
This new donation is a continuation of Bigelow family gifts in support
of the Colleges of Sciences and Health Sciences at UNLV. They are very
interested in seeing the disciplines of physics, biology, and
chemistry applied to the study of consciousness in an empirical
scientific manner.
The creation of this position represents a deep commitment to helping
scientists unravel some of the mysteries of consciousness as it may
relate to survival. At present, only a small number of colleges and
universities offer similar programs, but none offer a full chair.
Those include Duke, the University of Kentucky, Northeastern, Virginia
Tech, Carlton College, and Seton Hall. This gift presents UNLV
students with a unique opportunity and provides additional depth to
the UNLV curriculum.
