From: Rich McIntosh Date: Fri, 20 Jun 1997 16:11:09 -0800 Subject: Former Air Controller Says No Restriction on UFO Reports |
[Referring to http://www.ufobbs.com/txt2/1587.ufo linked to http://www.ufomind.com/ufo/topic/radar/ --GC] Regarding the addition Air Traffic Controller & UFO's : Radar. I read this guy's piece with interest because I am a former Controller and i've found most people don't have a clue. Mr. Spencer is most accurate in his description. I think he misses a couple of points that are important. The Air Traffic System is designed to identify aircraft who want to be identified. I have been aware of instances where the transponder of a medium sized aircraft failed and we flat never saw the guy on the digitized radar. It is very easy to elude FAA radar. The other point is Mr. Spencer seems to imply that there is a FAA policy to restrict information regarding UFO's. Controllers never see the things a pilot sees. If a UFO is reported by a pilot then so be it. Controllers by their nature are cantakerous independent types and would discuss UFO's with anyone willing to listen but they just don't have any data other than third party reports. The FAA is just not that well organized. Policy regarding military aircraft movement and such is confidential and as a young controller that fact is impressed upon you so as to leave no doubt, but to my knowledge a UFO report is not restricted in any way and those that say it is could very well be leaning towards the loon group.
