I'm not sure if the story has been discredited but I've always been
puzzled by La Paz's alleged methods here. Supposedly he and Rickett
went around interviewing locals to determine the flight path
the object took. Wouldn't it make more sense to examine the
actual crash site and debris to make this determination?
Interviewing locals sounds more like the Green Fireball project
La Paz was involved with some time later. If you were trying
to locate the remains of these fireballs, triangulating eyewitness
accounts would be the way to do it. If you already had a
crashed object, impact markings, gouges, etc., you could pretty much
work out the direction and elevation to point of impact.
FWIW, in public statements La Paz made during the 1952 saucer
flap over Washington, he made it quite clear that he thought the
"saucers" were man-made, not objects from outer space.
