The account of the recent UFO sighting in Reno, NV indicates
that a bright object was visible for an hour or so in the early
evening. The object drifted at approximately the "speed of the
upper winds", according to airport personnel, but occasionally
became stationary.
A colleague of mine saw an identical phenomenon in Hawaii last
year. He and a group of fellow engineers and physicists had spent
the day testing and calibrating a prototype sensor, and were
kicking back shortly after sunset when someone spotted a bright
object that appeared to move slowly in the sky, then stop, then
start up again in a different direction, then stop again, and so
forth. They trained a Celestron 8-inch telescope on the object
at high magnification, and saw that it consisted of several shiny
(probably aluminized mylar) balloons tied together. Because of
the altitude of the balloons, they were still catching direct
sunlight and reflecting it. Since the speed and direction of the
wind can change dramatically as a function of altitude, the
observers were not surprised when the balloons changed both speed
and direction as they rose higher and higher into the atmosphere.
