Yes, it's obvious that the man is on the run. His picture is on his
web page, and he is in the Grand Junction phone book.

I don't suppose the 'Men in Black' can access these sources of data,
or look at the address on his retirement check. Actually, I don't
suppose that anyone is looking for the man. IQ of 232....really?
Intelligence Quotient is a measure of intelligence derived from norms
provided by standardized intelligence tests. Would any of our
illustrious PhDs (no derogation intended) care to comment on how high
IQ can be measured?

Please allow me to digress:

Death threats and missing records seem to be a common thread
throughout UFOlogy. "I'm risking my life just telling you this much",
which is invariably nothing, or "All the records mysteriously
disappeared" seem to be pretty good indications that there is no
substance to the story or allegation.

If by chance there were a serious government cover-up, what could be
better than cluttering the field and confusing the situation with
stories that cause people to expend their time and energies going in
circles? It seems to me that interviewing people who have seen lights
in the sky, or floating triangles, or anything else, while
interesting, does not prove anything except that they saw something in
the sky. I am willing to concede that unknown objects are in the sky.
I have seen some that I could not identify and they cannot all be
swamp gas and weather balloons. But neither can they all be
extraterrestrials from Beta Reticulum searching for cattle to mutilate
or earthlings to subject to anal probes.

What is needed to demonstrate that UFOs are extraterrestrial or that
aliens have visited or are visiting earth if this is in fact the case,
is clear and unambiguous evidence. When that is forthcoming the
question will be settled. In the mean time, many investigators seem to
be grasping at any straw that comes along.

I appreciate the thirst for knowledge. But presenting completely
unsupportable and unsubstantiated stories to people as fact is not the
same as disseminating knowledge. If a person cares to make money or
obtain publicity by preying on people's gullibilities, they are free
to do so. Caveat Emptor.

However, a little common sense is indicated. We cannot believe the
President of the United States to tell the truth about many things. We
cannot, in general, believe ANY politician or public official,
including the military to tell the truth. For this reason we have
come to mistrust the government, and rightfully so. And so much
compartmentalization exists that obtaining an overview is very
difficult, even for people who have the appropriate clearances. Why
then, would we believe a military officer whose retirement check comes
from the government every month? A little hint like "If you ever speak
about any classified operations a little glitch may develop in the
computer which cuts your check" or "Your PX and medical priveleges
might be questioned" would be sufficient for any retired person. No
prison or death threats are necessary and would actually be
counterproductive. In any real case, no threat would ever be made. If
the suspicion were present that a real security risk existed, it would
be handled before any information could be compromised.

My point is that a person with an unbelievable story only becomes
believable if he submits the proof, with the story, in a manner which
will convince a group of reasonable and prudent people beyond a
reasonable doubt. Not if he tells a tale and counts on other people to
try and prove or disprove it if they can. Without proof they can do
nothing but debate it among themselves. When no consensus can be
reached, they line up on opposite sides and start parading pedigrees
and calling each other names.

Two examples:
(1)
I just received an email from Skywatch International entitled "US
Aircraft Carrier Stopped by UFO". I do not include it due to length,
but I will forward it to anyone who does not have it. To me, the story
is believable. Mr. Kopf makes no claims concerning conspiracies or
death threats. He merely reports his observations in what seems to be
a straightforward manner. He includes enough information of the right
kind to allow a reader to conclude that he probably worked where he
says he worked, and he does not draw conclusions. This story has a
nice ring.

(2)
This one just came in also, under the title "Largest UFO Reply". This is
the other kind. It is not believable.

Humanity does not necessarily deserve admission into whatever alien
societies may exist. We evolved into our present form as recently as
100,000 years ago. We still have fur on our bodies and vestigal claws
and a tail. Writing was developed about 6,000 years ago. Monothiestic
religion evolved about 1,200 BC so people could have another reason to
kill each other, and it has been very effective. Electricity has been
in general use for a little over a hundred years and much of the
world's population still does not have it. John T. Scopes was
convicted of teaching evolution in school in 1925, and while the
creationists still argue that we are God's unique gift to the universe
on the one hand, they make plans to inculcate alien cultures with
their backward superstitions on the other. Equality does not exist on
this planet between races, cultures, or even between men and women.
Weapons of mass destruction are being produced by every country which
has the capability. Why do you lock your doors..to keep the aliens
out, or to keep your brother humans from murdering you in your sleep
or stealing everything you own or abducting your children? The human
mind is understood vaguely at best, at least by us. We cannot stop
many terrestrial diseases.

As much as it may affect our egos, we must appear to representatives
of societies which have mastered intergalactic or transgalactic travel
as nothing more than animals of a fairly low order and may expect to
be treated as such until we can demonstrate otherwise.

Aloha
Tom Burnett
