Subject: Nevada most dangerous state in U.S. crime rankings

WASHINGTON (Reuter) - Nevada was named Wednesday as the most
dangerous state in the country for the second year in a row,
according to state crime statistics compiled by independent
publishing company, Morgan Quitno Press.

This year's safest state was North Dakota, the company said
in a statement.

The rankings, now in their fourth year, are based on six
basic crime types -- murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault,
burglary and car theft.

Florida was the second most dangerous state, followed by
Louisiana, Maryland, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Illinois,
Tennessee and Alaska.

New Hampshire was the second safest state, followed by
Maine, Vermont, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wyoming, Montana,
Iowa, Nebraska and Idaho.

``Over the past five years, Nevada has seen its violent
crime rate increase by nearly 40 percent while the nation as a
whole has enjoyed an almost 10 percent decrease,'' said Scott
Morgan, president of the Morgan Quitno.

He noted that Nevada's single year comparisons showed that
the violent crime rate in the state fell nearly six percent from
1994 to 1995, the most recent years for which crime statistics
were available from the FBI.

The rankings were calculated by measuring how a state's
crime rate compared to the national average and weighting the
results to reflect the crimes Americans fear most.
