Pop. Mechanics solves donuts-on-a-rope mystery

Popular Mechanics Magazine has at last solved the mystery of the
donuts-on-a-rope, sky ripping noise, hydrogen burning, external
combustion, Aurora aircraft.
On page 24 of the March 1998 issue in the Tech Update section, a small
article appears with a picture of an SR-71.
The article says "Palmdale, CA - Mystery aircraft spotters often point
to contrails resembling a "string of pearls" or, when faded, "donuts
on a rope" as evidence of the Aurora spyplane. During a recent visit
to the Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, PM spied photos that could put
rumors of the Mach 5 spyplane into a tailspin. They showed an SR-71
spyplane belching spherical puffs, like those shown above."
The article goes on to note the loss of funding for the SR-71 program.
The picture, of course, only shows an SR-71 rising in the sky with the
J58's in full afterburner. The "puffs" are in reality shock waves
produced in the air flow behind the engines. These shock waves are
rarely longer than the length of the engine nacelles. They are not,
as I read about them in the Aurora reports, the contrails that reach
across the sky. Nor is the phenomenon accompanied by the noise
described in the reports.
PM magazine, you've done it again! Reported on something without the
proper research.
