Landlord settles lawsuit
Robert Bigelow agrees to pay about $2 million to tenants
who say they were evicted without legal notice.

CARSON CITY -- A prominent Las Vegas landlord has agreed to a nearly
$2 million settlement that will benefit hundreds of former tenants
abruptly evicted from apartment complexes he owns.
Robert Bigelow's agreement settles a class-action lawsuit that had
been filed in September 1993 by Clark County Legal Services, headed by
Barbara Buckley.
The settlement, filed Tuesday in Clark County District Court, was
reached following Buckley's claim that evidence of "pinning," or
illegally locking out tenants in some of his 1,200 apartment units,
had been destroyed.
The evidence, according to Buckley, included actual sheets of paper
listing tenants who had been locked out instead of being served with
five-day eviction notices required by Nevada law.
The allegations of destroyed evidence surfaced in December during
proceedings being held in advance of a scheduled March 9 trial of the
case.
Bigelow, who with his wife, Diane, owns the Blue Harbor, South Cove,
Harbor Island and Shelter Island apartment complexes, doesn't admit to
any wrongdoing in the settlement, which will be reviewed in District
Court on March 5.
