Help! The Ufomind website has outgrown my ability to maintain it
singlehandedly. I am distressed by the large number of broken or
misplaced links on our index pages. In theory, I am supposed to
review the new links that people add to our pages, but I haven't had
the time.
What I need (I think) is a part-time "link auditor" who can spend
about an hour a day reviewing link additions and other changes to our
website. I can't afford to pay much -- probably a fixed "honorarium"
of about $100 per month -- so this is partly a volunteer position. If
you agree with the goals of the Ufomind site and are interested in the
information linked to it, you may not regard it as work at all. You
will play an important role in deciding how paranormal information is
classified and filed.
Here are the requirements of the job....
-- You must already be a frequent visitor to the Ufomind website.
You should understand our style and have a pretty good grasp of
our goals.
-- You should already be a subscriber to the Ufomind mailing
list, or read it regularly on the web. (Otherwise you will never
see this message anyway.)
-- You must have added your own links to a Ufomind index page at
some point in the past. (Using the "Add New Link" at the bottom
of the page.) This shows that you are at least familiar with the
basic system.
-- Obviously, you must have your own computer with a modern web
browser (not AOL), email and a reasonably fast connection to the
internet.
-- You must possess good judgement, high intelligence and an
ability to remain neutral about controversial claims.
-- Good spelling and grammar are essential!
The following qualifications are a plus, but we can be flexible for
a good candidate....
-- General knowledge of HTML
-- General knowledge of telnet and Unix -- and telnet already
installed on your computer.
-- Residence within North America (to allow phone calls).
-- Have stable daytime employment (so I can rely on you for an
extended period).
DUTIES
Duties require sitting down at your computer every day or so -- at any
time of your choosing -- and reviewing information on a series of web
screens. I only expect you to do this for about an hour at a time,
because that's about my own limit before fatigue sets in.
For reviewing new links added by others, you will be looking at a
screen similar to the "Add New Link" screen. Each new link is
displayed for you, and you will make sure it is consistent with the
Ufomind style and relevant to the page it is linked to. (You don't
have to look at the actual page at the new URL unless there is
something suspicious about it.) You will be making changes as
appropriate: editing, moving or deleting links.
You will also be reviewing user comments, changes to people pages and
requests for changes sent by email. I have developed a set of
tools to allow all of this changes with a minimum of effort, and you
will be trained in our systems as required. Most of our tools are
fairly intuitive and easy to use.
This position is similar to that of a municipal judge. You have to be
fair and even-handed, and you cannot let your own opinions intrude
into your work. When new links or comments are added to Ufomind
pages, you need not decide whether the claims they contain are true,
only whether the topic is relevant and the format of the link
conforms to our rules.
Although a knowledge of HTML is helpful, there is no direct HTML
programming involved, and telnet is useful only after you have
mastered all of our other tools. Initially, all of the changes you
make will be via email and the web browser. Your communication with
me will be via email and telephone (at my expense).
You will NOT be expected to perform any duty connected with the
commercial side of the website, like our catalog or advertizing. You
are also not required to actively seek out new links to add to our
site (although you are free to do this on your own time). You job is
mainly to assure the integrity of new additions made by others, and to
respond to specific requests.
REWARDS
As mentioned, I cannot afford to pay you much: I propose $100/month
initially, which isn't even minimum wage. You would only want to
apply for this position if you feel you can derive some personal
satisfaction from it.
Other rewards are:
-- You will be God (or at least the Son of God) when it comes to
deciding what belongs on the world's largest UFO and paranormal
website and how it should be filed.
-- You will be among the first to know about new websites.
-- You will be given credit for your work, being listed on our
staff page.
-- You can purchase any books in our catalog at wholesale.
HOW TO APPLY
Send me an email message with this info....
-- Name, age, mailing address and phone number.
-- Your website URL, if you have one.
-- The Ufomind URL and link number for the last link you added to
our pages.
-- Tell me about any parts of your background that may be relevant
to this position. (A full resume isn't necessary.)
-- Tell me about your current computer set-up (browser, modem
speed, etc.) Do you have a seperate phone line for your computer?
-- Tell me anything else you think I should know.
I have no idea how many people will apply (if any). I will acknowledge
your email right away, but I am not sure what will happen after that.
I will want to talk to the top candidates by telephone, probably within
the next week.
I suspect that the successful candidate is someone I have communicated
with before and whose work I am familiar with.
Glenn
