Marree man is disappearing into the desert
The Marree man is fading away. Just as it materialised mysteriously in
July, the 4km-long figure etched in the desert is being reclaimed by
nature.
The figure of a naked Aborigine carved into a remote plateau 60km west
of the tiny outback town of Marree stirred worldwide focus but no-one is
any closer to discovering who ploughed the figure.
The desert is slowly obliterating the man and, within a year, little is
likely to remain. Unusually heavy rains in the weeks after the figure
was first discoverd have fed grasses and bushes. Warmer weather has cut
the number of tourists to the area, about 700km north of Adelaide. And
scenic flights from Marree to the site ended last week.
Maree locals still claim they have no idea who created the figure,
although high-tech surveying equipment would have been needed to carry
out the task. Local businessman Ray Goss said: "I don't know who did it
and no-one else seems to have any idea."
