While conspiracy buffs have a field day with the Woomera Prohibited
Area by its very name, the accuracy of the above statement must be
questioned, and with it, the author's intent with unsubstantiated
information.
According to
http://www.dsto.defence.gov.au:80/corporate/trials/ranges/sa3.html ,
"The Woomera Prohibited Area (WPA) has been set aside by the
Australian Government for both military and approved civil
applications. The Woomera Instrumented Range (WIR) is a tenant of the
WPA and can be configured to support international and nation space,
aircraft, air and ground weapons test and evaluation programs.
Management and operation of the WIR is the principal responsibility of
the Aircraft Research and Development Unit (ARDU) - with the area
management, safety liaison, environmental compliance and
infrastructure responsibilities being undertaken by the Defence
Support Centre Woomera (DSCW).
"Occupying about 127,000km in the state of South Australia, the
Woomera Prohibited Area (WPA) is comprised principally of undulating
plateaus, salt lakes and low vegetation, enjoys largely unencumbered
airspace, consistent and benign atmospheric conditions, and is
electromagnetically quiet."
Where the extra 73,000 sq kms exists is beyond me. The author
provides no source. I'm sure the indigenous inhabitants of the area
would have raised a public outcry by now if another 73,000 sq kms
disappeared.
Nuclear tests were conducted by the British in the 1950s near Woomera
(the last in 1953) and Maralinga (the last in 1957). See
http://www.agso.gov.au/front/products.html and select Nuclear
Explosions. What is more amazing from this database are unknown
readings from the sites around the world.
Woomera rocket tests are again in the works with the Japanese (see
http://www.cossa.csiro.au/spin68/spin681.htm and
http://www.spacer.com/spacenet/text/woomera-97b.html ) and the Americans ( see
http://www.electric.on.net/news/12May-01.html and
http://www.aph.gov.au:80/library/pubs/cib/1997-98/98cib12.htm ) performing
tests.
The "secret base for hundreds of US military personnel," must be
referring to the satellite spy base at Nurrangar, declared redundant
and slated to close at the end of the century. (See
http://leonardo.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/Programs/dsp.html ). It's not so
secret because one can see the base from the main highway, as compared
to say, Area 51.

What is the source for this information?

ABC Radio is akin to NPR in the United States with one notable
exception: ABC Radio is not known for journalistic fairness,
objectivity and integrity. This country is in the midst of a federal
election ( 03 Oct 98) and current political reporting takes a nosedive
(if you can go lower than normal gutter reporting) among public and
private newsgatherers alike. I cannot call most of them journalists
since pandering to political philosophies is a way of life in
Australia. Since most Australians do not obtain their news directly
from overseas, but are filtered through a select few news
organisations, they have no way to compare how poorly they are being
served by these newsgatherers. There are more sheep here than you
realise.
While one cannot vouch for the honesty and integrity of the Australian
government websites listed above, without strong evidence to suggest
otherwise, the information should be taken at face value. For a
Woomera archivist's viewpoint, see
http://www.flinders.edu.au/topics/Morton/Victorians/FireLeviathan.htm
for more information.
Woomera is nothing like Area 51. Besides, if you are looking for such
locations in Australia, one doesn't have to travel to the Back and
Beyond. There are several near airports that one doesn't have to drive
for days through the Outback. For in Australia, the best secrets are
often found sitting in the open, because everyone else is looking
under the rocks.
