GROOM LAKE -- Bob Hetsko reports a friend of mine put me in touch
with an airline pilot who saw a UFO in June of 1998. He and his
co-pilot both saw a strange object flying in formation above them.
They were flying from west to east at 40,000 feet and the object was
overhead. Its altitude was hard to determine, due the relatively
small angular dimension of the object. It was the size of a pea held
at arm's length. The object was largely invisible, but appeared for
brief periods, where it appeared as a plume of orange exhaust, or a
cone of orange. It did not move like any rocket, jet or aircraft
that the two experienced pilots had seen before. The movement was
very erratic, and mostly back and forth, tending to follow the
airplane in general flight path. Several times the object seemed to
stop a little to the north of Nellis AFB. They watched for over 20
minutes. I asked the pilot if it was reported? He said it was not.
He said it is frowned on to report anomalies over the radio bands
unless the parties know each other. The pilot, of course, wanted to
remain anonymous.

While cruising through Filer's File #9 I noticed an error that jumped
out at me. The writer claimed that a friend put him/her in touch with
an Airline pilot who was flying west to east at 40,000 feet. Bogus.
The FAA despite it being a government agency does have some rules and
stuff. All west bound flights that operate above 29,000 feet use 2000
feet for layers and alternate layers for travel west to east and east to
west. For example West bound(compass headings from 181 to 360)
altitudes would 29000, 33000, 37000, 41000. Eastbound headings would be
31000, 35000, 39000, 43000. In addition commercial aitliners rarely if
ever get to 39000 much less 41000 although it is possible if the
airplane is big enough and burned off a lot of fuel, has less than a
full load etc, etc. Moreover R4808 group sits roughly in the middle of
all the restricted airspace north of Las Vegas. If you envision a piece
of pie with the center pointy end parked on Vegas you get pretty close
to the overall shape. A pilot flying and aircraft coming in from to the
south of the pointy end or south of Vegas would have have a very limited
range of view of the area and in fact would actually have to lean
forward and look at about his/her 4 o'clock or so for quite some time to
observe what the story says they saw. The othe side of the pie(envision
the crust end from Coaldale NV and east.) would have to look out at
their 9 o'clock still be well over 100 miles away to see this. Sounds
bogus to me. That's my 2cents.
